Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is reading time?

Average adult reading speed is 200–250 wpm for non-technical text. Technical or complex text may be slower (100–150 wpm). The 200 wpm baseline is a widely accepted standard.

What counts as a word?

Any sequence of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated words (e.g., “well-known”) count as one word. Numbers and contractions also count as words.

Does this work for other languages?

Yes, it works for any text. However, word counting for languages without spaces (e.g., Chinese, Japanese) will be less accurate since words aren’t delimited by whitespace.

What is the speaking time estimate based on?

Average conversational speaking rate is about 130–150 wpm. Presentations are typically slower (100–120 wpm) to allow for audience comprehension and pauses.

Disclaimer: Reading and speaking time estimates are based on average rates (200 wpm reading, 130 wpm speaking). Actual times may vary based on text complexity, reader skill, and speaking pace.
