How Currency Conversion Works

Converted Amount = Amount × Exchange Rate
Exchange Rate = Value of 1 unit of From Currency in To Currency

This calculator fetches live mid-market exchange rates from the Frankfurter API, which sources data from the European Central Bank. The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices on the global currency markets. It is the most realistic rate available for informational purposes.

Bid vs. Ask Spread: When exchanging currency at a bank or exchange service, you will typically see two rates: the bid price (the rate at which they buy your currency) and the ask price (the rate at which they sell you currency). The difference between these two is the spread, which represents the service fee. Our calculator shows the mid-market rate, so actual transaction rates may differ.

Examples

Japan to India: ¥50,000 JPY to INR at a rate of 0.556 = ₹27,780 Indian Rupees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are exchange rates determined?

Exchange rates are determined by supply and demand in the foreign exchange (Forex) market. Central banks, multinational corporations, governments, and individual traders all influence rates. Factors include interest rates, inflation, political stability, and trade balances between countries.

Why do exchange rates change frequently?

Currency markets operate 24 hours a day, five days a week, and are the largest financial markets in the world. Rates shift constantly in response to economic news, geopolitical events, central bank policy changes, and market speculation. Even small changes in interest rates or trade data can cause noticeable movements.

Is this rate accurate for actual transactions?

The rates shown are mid-market reference rates sourced from the European Central Bank. They are suitable for informational and comparison purposes. Actual rates offered by banks, credit card companies, and exchange services will differ due to spreads, commissions, and fees. Always check with your financial provider for the exact rate you will receive.

Disclaimer: Exchange rates are sourced from the European Central Bank via the Frankfurter API and are updated daily.
