Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions step by step with our easy-to-use fraction calculator. Supports simplification and mixed number conversion.

5/6

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) for the first fraction.
  2. Select the operation: add (+), subtract (−), multiply (×), or divide (÷).
  3. Enter the numerator and denominator for the second fraction.
  4. Click Calculate to see the result as a simplified fraction, mixed number, and decimal.
  5. The step-by-step solution panel shows the full working.

Formulas

Addition: a/b + c/d = (a×d + b×c) / (b×d)
Subtraction: a/b − c/d = (a×d − b×c) / (b×d)
Multiplication: a/b × c/d = (a×c) / (b×d)
Division: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a×d) / (b×c)

After performing the operation, the result is automatically simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD).

Examples

Adding Fractions

1/2 + 1/3: Find common denominator (6). Convert: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 ≈ 0.833.

Multiplying Fractions

2/3 × 3/4: Multiply numerators (2×3=6) and denominators (3×4=12). Simplify 6/12 = 1/2.

Dividing Fractions

3/5 ÷ 2/7: Flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/5 × 7/2 = 21/10 = 2 1/10 = 2.1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole, written as numerator/denominator. The numerator is the number of parts, and the denominator is the total number of equal parts.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, such as 1 1/2. This calculator shows both the improper fraction and mixed number form of the result.

How do I simplify a fraction?

Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For example, 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 because GCD(6,8) = 2.

Can I use negative fractions?

Yes. Enter a negative sign before the numerator to use negative fractions in any operation.
