Grade Calculator – Final Exam Score Predictor
Find out exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired course grade. Works with any weighted grading system — just enter your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight.
How to Use This Grade Calculator
Follow these steps to find out what you need on your final exam:
- Enter your current grade percentage (your grade before the final exam).
- Enter your desired (target) grade percentage (the grade you want to earn in the course).
- Enter the final exam weight as a percentage (e.g., 30% means the final is worth 30% of your total grade).
- Click "Calculate Required Score" to see the minimum score you need on the final exam.
- Review the result — if it’s above 100%, your target may not be achievable with the current grade.
How It Works – The Grade Formula
The calculator uses a weighted grading formula to determine the minimum final exam score:
Where all values are expressed as decimals (e.g., 90% = 0.90). The formula works by:
- Calculating your current grade contribution: Current × (1 − FinalWeight)
- Finding the gap between your desired grade and current contribution
- Dividing by the final exam weight to find the required score
Examples
Required = (0.90 − 0.78 × (1 − 0.30)) ÷ 0.30
Required = (0.90 − 0.78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30
Required = (0.90 − 0.546) ÷ 0.30
Required = 0.354 ÷ 0.30 = 1.18 = 118%
Not achievable — you would need more than 100% on the final.
Required = (0.85 − 0.82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25
Required = (0.85 − 0.615) ÷ 0.25
Required = 0.235 ÷ 0.25 = 0.94 = 94%
You need a 94% on the final to earn an 85% in the course.
Required = (0.80 − 0.70 × 0.50) ÷ 0.50
Required = (0.80 − 0.35) ÷ 0.50
Required = 0.45 ÷ 0.50 = 0.90 = 90%
You need a 90% on the final exam.
Frequently Asked Questions
What grade do I need on my final?
Enter your current grade, desired grade, and final exam weight into the calculator. It will tell you the minimum percentage you need to score on the final exam to achieve your target grade. If the result exceeds 100%, your goal may not be attainable with your current grade — consider aiming for a slightly lower target or seeking extra credit.
How does weighted grading work?
In a weighted grading system, each component of your grade (assignments, quizzes, midterms, finals) has a different percentage weight. For example, assignments might be 40%, midterm 30%, and final 30%. Your final course grade is the sum of each component’s weighted contribution. This calculator focuses on the final exam portion.
What if I want to raise my grade by 10 points?
Simply enter your desired grade as your current grade + 10. For example, if your current grade is 75% and you want to raise it to 85%, enter 75 as current and 85 as desired. The calculator will tell you what you need on the final. Remember that raising your grade significantly is harder when the final has a small weight.
Is this grade calculator accurate?
This calculator uses the standard weighted grading formula and is mathematically accurate. However, it assumes your institution uses a simple weighted average system. Some schools use different grading scales (e.g., 4.0 GPA), curve grades, or have additional weighting rules. Always check your course syllabus for the exact grading policy.
