How It Works – The Paycheck Formula

Your net (take-home) pay is calculated by subtracting all mandatory and voluntary deductions from your gross pay:

Net Pay = Gross Pay − Federal Tax − State Tax − FICA − Pre-Tax Deductions
Effective Tax Rate = (Total Taxes ÷ Gross Pay) × 100

Where each tax component is computed as:

  • Federal Tax = Gross Pay × (Federal Tax Rate ÷ 100)
  • State Tax = Gross Pay × (State Tax Rate ÷ 100)
